E! News: The Entertainment Platform of the Century

E! News is definitely an entertainment outlet that those of us who love the gossip tune into on the regular. With E! News becoming a popular source for such gossip, it’s only fair to understand why they are extremely present and involved on many social media platforms. I decided to a deeper dive into just how good E! News’ social media presence is. I took a look at their Twitter for about five days and some of my findings might surprise you.

  • Posts over 20 times a day
  • Has much involvement from fans, the public and of course- the haters.
  • Never posts “fake news”

The news is usually about gossip, marriages, celebrity babies, famous deaths, or break ups and divorces. The content is mostly always read or click worthy and it draws in its audience. I mean come on, who doesn’t feel tempted to click on Cardi B and Offset getting back together? The headlines are well worded, with no grammatical errors and they’re even sometimes catchy or humorous. For example, On Wednesday, January 30, most popular post was about Courtney Cox and Lisa Kudrow. E! News called it a “reunion” but the two were just hanging out. E! News posts mostly about what is happening that day. For instance, when Bradly Cooper and Lady Gaga were nominated for Oscars, they posted about it 18 times within 24 hours (excessive!).

Considering their overall following they tend to get great feedback and results on certain posts. It appears the more biased or “sassy” the headlines are the more interaction they seem to get from followers. They have 11.5 million followers and can get responses up in the thousands. However, sometimes their engagement is low depending on what they post about. Although they do get a lot of responses, they do engage back with their followers. Often they agree with comments or respond to comments and questions their posts with encouragement and emojis (big win!), but it seems they tend to ignore the hate. They do not respond often to negative comments or replies. The posts E! News facilitates do not seem to dig up many questions, mostly just comments. With that being said, they do, however, respond quickly to the comments that their followers post and who doesn’t love a good emoji?

According to Social Media Today, E! News does a good job of not using too many hashtags. Their post rarely contain them, if ever. They also use visuals which is a good thing. However, they lack videos. According to the article, videos bring in more views and spark attention. If the E! News Twitter posted more videos I believe they’d get more involvement from their followers. Although Twitter has a caption capacity, E! News still does a great job of keeping it short and simple. They get the message across without too many words or lines.

Not only does the entertainment industry call for E! News to post often, getting back to their followers can be an essential piece for their Twitter presence. Let’s take a look at why.

According to Sprout Social, Twitter presence is extremely important for brands, especially news outlets for the following reasons:

  1. You are reaching your audience immediately
  2. It gives you the means to response to followers quickly
  3. You chat with audiences directly, this gives the brand a more personal feel
  4. You establish your expertise (in this case, credibility)
  5. You engage with a targeted audience

  1. Annie,

E! News sounds like a brand that has really figured out their audience and the voice that appeals to them. I can’t imagine managing an account of that size that tweets as much as they do. It was interesting that they chose the nonresponse route for negative comments, as opposed to some “sassy” replies back.

Can’t wait to read about their competitor!

  2. I enjoyed reading the introduction! I liked that you put some examples of what they are tweeting about such as the Cardi B and Offset scandal. I also liked that you didn’t write a listicle because I feel we are all writing very similar things. You did a great job without writing your findings as a list.
